Operation Barbarossa 1941 : Hitler against Stalin

Based on decades of research work in both German and Russian archives, as well as interviews with a large number of key figures and veterans, Operation Barbarossa brings our knowledge on the war on the Eastern Front several big steps forward. It reveals and dispels many myths and misconceptions including: the myth of mass surrenders by Soviet soldiers; the myth about the vast differences in troop casualties between the two sides; the myth of the Soviet partisans and the myth that it was the Arctic cold that halted the German offensive.

The book does not shy away from difficult truths such as the true nature of Finland’s participation in Operation Barbarossa, and the massive scale of rapes committed by German troops.

Illustrated with over 270 photos, many never previously published, and several clear and detailed maps, this is an objective, balanced account. Christer Bergström has once again produced what will be the definitive account of this monumental campaign.
From the Swedish Library Service’s review:
”This book is an exceptionally versatile, fact-packed and a neutral depiction of Operation Barbarossa. The text also contains a large number of eye-witness accounts from both sides, which makes the presentation authentic and vibrant. It is an interesting and thought-provoking book.”
– BTJ booklet no. 22, 2016.

Other reviews on Operation Barbarossa – Hitler against Stalin:

“Christer Bergström is recognized as a prominent expert on the Second World War, not least concerning the Eastern Front. Bergström’s book on Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 is so extensive, profound, and detailed that I am totally taken aback.”

– Kjell E. Genberg in DAST Magazine.
“Christer Bergström’s new book Operation Barbarossa lives up to the author’s good reputation in every way as a conscientious expert and pioneering author of books on historical subjects. His new book is obviously based on careful research and gives the reader a new image of Hitler’s campaign against Stalin’s Soviet Union. The book at the same time punctuates several myths. A book to highly recommend!”
– Lennart Westberg, author (with Lars Gyllenhaal) for the books ”Swedes in war 1914-1945” and ”Swedes in war 1945-2015”.
